Talkmobile and giffgaff are both budget brands owned by big networks, and they sit on rival masts. Talkmobile is one of Vodafone's brands and runs on Vodafone's network, plus Three's masts where the merged networks share them. giffgaff is owned by Virgin Media O2 and runs on O2's network. Neither credit checks its SIM plans, so the choice comes down to signal, price, contract length and how you like to get help.

Live rows show the deals in our feed at the last refresh, not every plan a network sells. EU roaming was checked against each network’s own pages on 28 August 2026, eSIM on 26 August 2026, and ownership and exit terms on 23 September 2026. Vodafone and Three masts are shared only at sites where sharing has been switched on: 10,000 of them by April 2026, according to Vodafone.
Which has better coverage where you live?
It depends on your area, because the networks differ. Ofcom's January 2026 figures put Vodafone ahead on indoor 4G, at 97.4% of premises against O2's 95.5%, and further ahead in rural areas, at 86.7% against 82.0%. O2 led on outdoor 5G, at 86.2% against Vodafone's 77.3%.
Talkmobile adds one more layer. It says customers "automatically access both Vodafone and Three networks for more coverage, at no extra cost". That sharing covered 10,000 mast sites by April 2026, according to Vodafone. giffgaff runs on O2's masts only.
Check your postcode on our mobile coverage map before comparing prices. A cheaper plan on the weaker network at your address is a false saving.
Which is cheaper, Talkmobile or giffgaff?
On rolling plans, Talkmobile was cheaper across the range when we checked on 23 September 2026. Its unlimited data plan cost £16 a month against giffgaff's £20. For 100GB, Talkmobile charged £8.95 a month rolling; giffgaff's 100GB plans cost £15 on 18 months or £20 rolling. Talkmobile's cheapest plan was £4.95 for 5GB.
giffgaff's strength is its 18-month contracts, which it calls "our best value plans". On those, unlimited data cost £14 a month, less than Talkmobile's rolling price. Do you have to sign a contract?
Both offer a choice. Talkmobile sells 30-day rolling plans and 12-month contracts, and in our feed its 30-day plans came with more data than its 12-month plans at the same price. giffgaff sells monthly rolling plans and 18-month contracts, where you can change plan each month without restarting the term.
Leaving a contract early costs different amounts. Talkmobile's fee is the charges left, less 2%. giffgaff charges half the monthly price for each month left, so on a £14 plan with ten months to go that's £70.
Can the price go up?
Neither has a scheduled rise in our feed. giffgaff's deals page promises a "Price lock" with "no mid-contract price rises" on its 18-month contracts, though its general terms keep a right to change prices with notice. None of Talkmobile's 16 deals in our feed carries a scheduled rise, and on a 30-day plan you could leave without a fee if that changed. Our price rise guide explains the rules.
Will either run a credit check?
No, for SIM plans. Talkmobile says: "No credit check is required for Talkmobile SIM Only deals". giffgaff says: "They'll only carry out a credit check if you buy a phone on a contract with a loan". That covers its 18-month SIM contracts too.
Which is better for travel?
They're close. Talkmobile includes roaming in 47 European destinations with a 5GB fair use limit, and treats Ireland as included for everyone. giffgaff includes EU roaming up to 5GB, then charges 10p for each extra MB, according to its plan pages. How does customer service compare?
This is the clearest practical difference. Talkmobile has a phone line: 5888 from a Talkmobile phone, open 8am to 8pm on weekdays, 9am to 6pm on Saturdays and 10am to 5pm on Sundays, with webchat until 10pm on weekdays. giffgaff has no phone line; help comes through its online help hub, an AI assistant that hands over to agents, and its member community.
Ofcom publishes figures for giffgaff but not for Talkmobile, which it stopped reporting separately after 2016. giffgaff recorded 1 complaint per 100,000 customers from January to March 2026, against an industry average of 2. In Ofcom's 2024 customer service survey, 94% of giffgaff customers were satisfied overall.
What extras come with each?
giffgaff runs Payback, which pays members for recommending friends, answering community questions and suggesting ideas. Each point is worth 1p, paid out in June and December as PayPal cash, credit or a charity donation. It offers an optional spend cap and is a certified B Corp.
Talkmobile includes Wi-Fi Calling on all its SIM plans, allows tethering and runs a refer-a-friend scheme. When you run out of data, it stops rather than charging you, and you can buy a booster to carry on.
