How Good is Broadband in Carlisle?

Carlisle's average speeds are among the highest of any area we compare. Three networks overlap across most of the city: Openreach fibre, Virgin Media in three generations, and a YouFibre build that takes independent coverage to 66%, well above the UK average. Full fibre reaches 90% of premises, gigabit availability 93%, and copper-only ADSL is down to 2%, almost all of it in the surrounding countryside.

Belle Vue, Newtown, Raffles and Morton in the west have all three networks, with Virgin's newest fibre build on top. Currock, Upperby, Harraby and Garlands across the south match them, with Virgin's fibre-to-the-home rather than cable. Botcherby and Durranhill to the east are as well served, and Lowry Hill, St Ann's Hill and Edentown north of the river have fibre, cable and YouFibre too. Kingstown has fibre and cable, and Denton Holme and Longsowerby have fibre and YouFibre. The city centre and Stanwix are the thinner patches, with Openreach doing most of the work. Out in the villages, Fibrus is starting to appear at Carleton, Cumwhinton, Wetheral and Scotby.

Alternative broadband providers in Carlisle

Independent fibre reaches 66% of premises across the Carlisle area, well above the UK average, and it is mostly one network: YouFibre. The build covers most of the city, from Lowry Hill and Edentown in the north through Belle Vue, Raffles and Morton in the west to Currock, Upperby, Harraby and Garlands in the south. Botcherby and Durranhill in the east are covered too. Beyond the bypass, Fibrus is bringing fibre to the villages under its rural Cumbria contract. There is no CityFibre here. With Virgin Media also strong, most city streets have three gigabit-capable networks, so compare on price rather than assuming any one of them is cheapest.

Carlisle's numbers put it firmly in the well-served bracket: full fibre at 90% and gigabit availability at 93%, both around the UK average, with Virgin Media covering 69% of premises and Openreach fibre 79%. The independent-network build at 66% is well above typical UK levels, and average download speeds here are among the fastest of any area we compare.

Virgin Media is unusual in Carlisle for running three generations of network at once: original cable in the north, fibre-to-the-home across the south, and its newest fibre build in the west. Add YouFibre across most of the city and Fibrus arriving in the villages, and 17 providers compete for most households. Copper-only ADSL at 2% is almost entirely a rural story.
