How Good is Broadband in Isle of Wight?
The Isle of Wight has one of the highest full-fibre coverage rates in the UK, and most of it comes from a local company. WightFibre has built its own network across 90% of the island's premises, one of the highest independent shares anywhere in the UK, taking overall full fibre to 92% and gigabit availability to 92%. Openreach fibre reaches 50%, there is no Virgin Media cable at all, and copper-only ADSL is down to 1%.
Shanklin, Sandown, Lake and Brading down the east coast have both WightFibre and Openreach fibre, and the widest choice of deals on the island. Ryde, Binstead and Seaview match them, as do Cowes and East Cowes in the north. Newport and Carisbrooke are covered by WightFibre throughout, with Openreach fibre on some streets but not others, so the choice of providers varies by road even in the county town. Ventnor, Godshill and Wroxall in the south and Freshwater, Totland and Yarmouth in the west are on WightFibre with patchier Openreach fibre. The only real gaps are the farming interior around Calbourne and Shalfleet and the downs above Brighstone and Chale.
