How Good is Broadband in Lisburn?

Lisburn is one of the best-served cities in the UK for full fibre, largely because Openreach has built across almost the whole city. Its network alone reaches 95% of premises, taking full fibre to 97% and gigabit availability to 98% across the Lisburn and Castlereagh council area. Virgin Media's cable adds a second network to 58% of homes. Independent networks are thin on the ground at 26%, but with near-universal Openreach fibre there is little gap for them to fill.

Ballymacash, Lady Wallace and Magheralave in the north have both fibre and cable. Wallace Park and the city centre match them, as do Tonagh, Knockmore and Old Warren to the south-west and the Hillhall estate to the south-east. Hilden and Lambeg along the Lagan have full fibre throughout, with cable on most streets. The newer developments at Brokerstown Village and around Breton Hall have Virgin's full-fibre build rather than cable. Only the Lissue industrial estate and the outlying rural roads narrow the choice, and even they carry fibre postcodes.

Alternative broadband providers in Lisburn

Independent fibre reaches 26% of premises across the Lisburn and Castlereagh area, below the UK average. Inside Lisburn itself it is barely present: a scatter of premises around Lambeg and Ballyskeagh and along the rural roads to the west. There is no CityFibre in Northern Ireland. Openreach's full fibre already reaches 95% of premises, leaving little for a challenger to add. Competition comes instead from the many providers selling over that network and from Virgin Media's cable, so compare on price across both rather than waiting for a new network.

Broadband coverage and technology in Lisburn

Lisburn's numbers are among the strongest of any area we compare: full fibre at 97%, gigabit availability at 98% and copper-only ADSL down to 1%. Openreach's own network reaches 95% of premises, a share few towns in Great Britain can match.

Virgin Media covers 58% of homes, mostly on its original cable network, and independent fibre is scarce at 26%. That makes Lisburn a two-network city rather than a three-network one, but with 16 providers retailing over Openreach the choice of deals is as wide as anywhere. Average speeds comfortably beat the national mean.
