How Good is Broadband in Torquay?

Torquay's broadband is better than its seaside reputation suggests: full fibre reaches 92% of premises across the bay (the figures cover the whole of Torbay, taking in Torquay, Paignton and Brixham), above the national average, almost all of it delivered over Openreach's network.

Northern Torquay is particularly well provided for: Watcombe, Barton, Combe Pafford and St Marychurch pair the fibre build with Virgin Media's newest full-fibre technology. Central and southern Torquay, from Shiphay, Torre and Upton through Ellacombe to Livermead and Vane Hill, combines fibre with the established cable network. Babbacombe, Plainmoor and Wellswood are covered by fibre, with cable patchier towards the headland, while Cockington and the Maidencombe coast thin out quickly. Paignton and Brixham share the borough's near-complete Openreach rollout, so the whole bay tells the same story as Torquay: plenty of speed available, independent networks essentially absent, and price competition happening at the deal table.

Alternative broadband providers in Torquay

Independent fibre networks are almost absent from Torquay and the wider bay, with altnet coverage under 2% of premises against a UK average near 47%, and the map confirms it: only isolated pockets around Shiphay and Edginswell show any independent build. The bay's competition instead comes from the many providers selling over Openreach's extensive full fibre network and from Virgin Media's cable where it reaches.

Torbay's infrastructure is an Openreach story: the incumbent's fibre build reaches 88% of premises, pushing overall full fibre to 92%, above the national average. Virgin Media covers 65% of the bay, and gigabit availability stands at 94%.

Independent networks have essentially not built here, with altnet coverage under 2%. That removes one source of price pressure, but because dozens of providers retail over the Openreach network, competition survives at the deal table. Average measured speeds trail the national mean, which suggests plenty of Torbay households are still sitting on older packages despite faster lines being available at the same address, exactly the situation where a comparison pays.
