How Good is Broadband in St Albans?

St Albans is well served for broadband. Three networks overlap across most of the city: Openreach fibre, Virgin Media cable and a CityFibre build. Full fibre reaches 85% of premises across the district, gigabit availability 95%, and Virgin's cable covers 75% of homes, well above its national footprint. Independent networks sit at 42%, around the UK average, and copper-only ADSL is down to 1%.

New Greens, Bernards Heath, Marshalswick and Jersey Farm in the north have all three networks competing. Fleetville and The Camp to the east match them, as do Cottonmill, Sopwell and St Julians south of the centre, where the widest choice of deals in the city sits. St Stephens has fibre and cable throughout and CityFibre on some streets. The villages of Chiswell Green, Park Street and How Wood have fibre and cable but no independent network yet, while London Colney does. Sandridge is well covered by fibre with cable on most streets. The only real gaps are the western parkland and the farmland between the villages.

Alternative broadband providers in St Albans

Independent fibre reaches 42% of premises across the St Albans district, around the UK average, and it is one story: CityFibre. The build covers most of the city, from New Greens, Bernards Heath and Marshalswick in the north through Fleetville and the centre to Cottonmill, Sopwell and St Julians, with a cluster at London Colney. Providers such as Vodafone, Sky, TalkTalk, Zen and toob sell on it. Chiswell Green, Park Street and How Wood are not yet on the network. With Virgin Media cable also strong, most city streets have three gigabit-capable networks, so compare on price rather than assuming any one of them is cheapest.

St Albans sits comfortably in the well-served bracket. Full fibre at 85% and gigabit availability at 95% are both around the UK average, while Virgin Media's cable at 75% is well above its national footprint. Openreach's own fibre reaches 80% of premises, and CityFibre takes independent coverage to 42%.

Most city streets have three gigabit-capable networks and 17 providers competing, with copper-only ADSL down to 1% and average speeds well above the national mean. The outer villages have two networks rather than three. For most households the practical question is which network has the best introductory deal this month.
